Recognise → Understand → Begin to Use

The learner's first achievement is not perfection. It is becoming comfortable enough with English to begin using it. From sounds and words to sentences, skills and communication, every chapter lays another stone in the path toward the higher levels of Functional → Competent → Advanced → Expert → Autonomous.

And that is why the beautiful message on your Level 1 design—“Build the basics. Unlock a brighter future!”—fits this level perfectly. 🌱✨

🌱 LEVEL 1 — FOUNDATION

Recognise and Understand

1. English Sound and Word Awareness

🔊 English begins with sound. Before learners can communicate confidently, they need to notice how English sounds, how sounds connect with letters, where words begin and end, and how syllables and stress shape spoken language. Developing this awareness gives learners a strong foundation for both listening and speaking.

🌱 At this stage, learners gradually become familiar with the English sound system. They learn to distinguish vowels and consonants, recognise common sound–letter relationships, notice word boundaries and identify syllables and basic word stress. These may seem like small discoveries, but together they make English increasingly understandable.

✨ The goal is not perfect pronunciation from the beginning; it is confident awareness. When learners can hear differences, recognise familiar sound patterns and connect sounds with written words, they begin to approach English with greater confidence. Every sound they recognise is another step toward meaningful communication.

2. Essential Vocabulary

📚 Vocabulary gives learners the words with which to build their first world in English. At Foundation level, learners encounter practical words connected with themselves and their immediate surroundings—people, family, numbers, time, colours, objects, food, places, activities and everyday experiences.

🌿 The emphasis is on useful, high-frequency vocabulary rather than memorising isolated word lists. Learners begin to understand what words mean, how they are used and how they appear in simple sentences. Gradually, familiar words become tools for expressing needs, ideas, preferences and experiences.

💡 Every new word is a small piece of communicative power. As learners build a reliable vocabulary base, English becomes less mysterious and more usable. The objective is not simply to know many words, but to recognise and use important words with increasing confidence.

3. Basic Grammar

🧩 Grammar provides the structure that allows words to work together. At Foundation level, learners begin to understand essential building blocks such as nouns, pronouns, articles, singular and plural forms, possessives, demonstratives, prepositions and basic conjunctions.

🌱 Grammar should be discovered through meaningful examples rather than experienced as a collection of complicated rules. Learners gradually notice how English expresses people, things, actions, relationships, quantity, place and time. Simple patterns become familiar through explanation, examples and repeated use.

✨ A strong grammatical foundation creates freedom rather than restriction. Once learners understand the basic patterns of English, they can begin producing their own sentences instead of merely repeating memorised expressions. Grammar becomes a quiet framework supporting communication.

4. The Basic Sentence

🏗️ The sentence is where English begins to carry complete meaning. Learners discover how words are organised into simple English sentences, especially the importance of word order and basic subject–verb–object patterns.

🔎 At this stage, learners practise affirmative and negative sentences, yes/no questions, WH-questions and short answers. They learn that changing the position or form of words can change meaning. This awareness helps them move from individual words toward genuine communication.

🌟 Learning to construct a sentence is an important milestone. A learner who can take familiar words and arrange them into a meaningful sentence has already begun to create with English. From these simple structures, increasingly complex communication can eventually grow.

5. Essential Verb System

⚙️ Verbs give sentences movement and meaning. Foundation learners begin with the essential verbs be, have and do, and gradually encounter basic forms for the present, past and future, together with useful structures such as imperatives and common modal verbs.

🌱 The aim is to help learners recognise and use verbs in everyday situations. They learn how English expresses existence, possession, actions, ability, possibility, obligation and simple intentions. Through carefully sequenced practice, verb patterns become increasingly familiar.

🚀 A dependable verb foundation opens the door to real expression. Learners can begin to describe who they are, what they have, what they do, what happened and what they want to do. Each new verb pattern expands the learner's ability to participate in life through English.

6. Everyday Listening

🎧 Listening is the gateway through which spoken English first becomes meaningful. Foundation learners begin by recognising familiar words, names, numbers, expressions and simple instructions in carefully supported speech.

👂 Good listening development is more than simply hearing English. Learners gradually learn to identify key information, recognise familiar questions and understand the main meaning of short, simple exchanges. Repeated exposure helps the ear become increasingly comfortable with English sounds and rhythms.

🌊 At first, English may seem like a continuous stream of unfamiliar sounds. With patient practice, that stream begins to separate into recognisable words, phrases and meanings. Every moment of successful listening strengthens confidence and prepares the learner for real conversation.

7. Basic Speaking

🗣️ Speaking gives learners the opportunity to turn knowledge into action. At Foundation level, learners practise greetings, introductions, personal information, simple questions, requests, likes and dislikes, and other familiar expressions.

🌿 The focus is on meaningful communication rather than immediate perfection. Learners need opportunities to produce short sentences, respond to questions, ask for help and express simple needs. Mistakes are treated as natural evidence of learning and opportunities for improvement.

🌟 Every sentence spoken is a step toward confidence. A learner who can introduce themselves, ask a simple question or express a basic need has already crossed an important communication barrier. Speaking grows through courage, repetition, feedback and purposeful practice.

8. Basic Reading

📖 Reading opens a second pathway into English. Foundation learners begin with practical written language such as signs, labels, menus, forms, notices, short messages, simple emails and brief paragraphs.

🔎 At first, reading is about recognising meaning rather than analysing every word. Learners learn to identify familiar vocabulary, understand simple sentences, locate important information and use context to support comprehension.

🌱 Every successfully understood text builds independence. A sign understood in a public place, a form completed correctly or a short message read confidently represents a small but valuable achievement. Reading gradually transforms written English from something unfamiliar into a useful source of information.

9. Basic Writing

✍️ Writing allows learners to make their thoughts visible in English. Foundation writing begins with spelling, words, phrases and simple sentences before gradually moving toward short messages, notes, personal information and basic forms.

📝 Accuracy matters, but confidence matters too. Learners practise basic word order, spelling, punctuation and sentence formation while learning to communicate simple meanings. Short writing tasks provide opportunities to apply vocabulary and grammar in purposeful contexts.

🌟 A simple sentence written independently is a meaningful achievement. From names and personal information to short messages and notes, learners begin to discover that English is not merely something they read or hear—it is something they can create.

10. Foundation Communication

🤝 Language ultimately exists for communication. Foundation Communication brings together the knowledge and skills developed throughout Level 1 and places them into familiar human situations—classrooms, everyday encounters, simple requests, introductions and basic social exchanges.

💬 Learners also begin to develop the courage to manage communication problems. Expressions such as “Could you repeat that?”, “I don't understand,” and “What does this mean?” are powerful tools because successful communication does not require understanding everything immediately.

🌍 This chapter marks the beginning of the learner's journey from studying English to using English. The goal is not to produce flawless speakers, readers or writers overnight. It is to create learners who are willing to communicate, learn from mistakes, ask for clarification and continue moving forward with confidence.
